Dr. Henry “Hank” Scheuermann passed away on December 14, 2020. He was born in New York, NY on June 3rd, 1930 to Loretta Cecilia (nee Coyne) Scheuermann and Henry Aloysius Scheuermann.
Hank left this world peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife Flo and stepdaughter Kim. A consummate gentleman, often wearing his signature bow tie, Hank lived his 90 years patterning his life after the Latin phrase displayed reverently on his car Opus Dei, “Work of God”. He was a devout Catholic all his life and most recently a member and generous donor of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Oro Valley, AZ. It was there he met his second wife Florence McPherson-Kudla and was readily embraced into her extended family of six children and their families; Susan Box, Kim Perkins, Brian McPherson, Carla McPherson, Mary Jo Jarrell, and Janice Anderson quickly earning the title of step-father and step-grandfather.
Prior to his retirement and moving to the Southwest, Hank spent much of his life on the east coast growing up outside New York City and in New Hampshire. He studied medicine and practiced as a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in dental surgery while completing a fellowship in psychiatry. His years as a resident surgeon were spent at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. In service to our country, Hank worked as an Army MD specializing in reconstructive surgery for injured veterans. His expertise expanded nationwide through his involvement on various hospital boards.
Hank’s thirst for knowledge and attention to detail were evident in many of his hobbies. He meticulously rebuilt several Porsche racecars giving him an appreciation for the speed and torque of each vehicle. Hank’s interest in technology - especially Apple products – increased his fascination with the internet.
Hank was known for his well articulated sense of humor and graciousness. When he felt his age getting the best of him, he would state he and God were having a dispute over his body. He never let you enter his space without a joyful hug or firm handshake. He always responded, “I am blessed” and unconditionally expressed his love for you.
Hank had a deep appreciation for the arts and fine dining. His love for the theater and opera, especially Madame Butterfly, was often shared with his predeceased twin, Robert Adrian Scheuermann. Hank’s discerning taste for food was ever present in his search for the perfect oyster, dark chocolate treat, or slice of cherry pie. He knew what he liked.
Hank dealt with the loss of his first wife, Norma Clare (Collins) Scheuermann and their two children, Henry Scheuermann and Alyssa (nee Scheuermann) Taylor with admired graciousness. Though the miles separated them, Hank’s love for his grandson, Henry Charles, and his family, Catharina (wife), and great-grandsons, Henry Conrad and Charles Constantine were evident. Hank’s beloved sister Patricia Ann Sullivan and niece Andrea Sullivan Jurek predeceased him. He is survived by his cherished nieces and nephew, Tillie Sullivan, Elaina Sullivan, Lorette Sullivan Dodt, and, Sean Sullivan.
A celebration of life will be celebrated at St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church, 2727 W. Tangerine Road, Oro Valley, AZ on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, with a Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Hank will be laid to rest in the Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery 15950 N. Luckett Road, Marana, Arizona 85653 at noon.
