What follows is an appeal from Bishop Weisenburger for immediate help for families released in Tucson. I have responded and I invite you to respond also.
You may have seen in the news that Catholic Community Services has been assisting with the most recent crisis with migrant families seeking asylum. Large number of families with children are being released into the Diocese of Tucson in both Yuma and Tucson. The Casa Alitas program of CCS has been operating for over 4 years now and in this history we have not been required to manage so many people in such a short period of time. Our parishes, members of the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul and many other Catholic and faith communities have helped with volunteers, food, clothing, shoes, backpacks and other travel items. Two of our parishes, St. Pius and Our Mother of Sorrows have opened the doors of their parish facilities to help house and feed people overnight while they wait for busses to transport them to families in other parts of the country. There are 200 more people making their way toward Ajo and we expect that ICE will need to be releasing them in the next few days. This will be in addition to the 400 people we are assisting in Yuma and Tucson. If you are able to help donate please go to the Catholic Community Services website www.ccs-soaz.org and review the list of needs. Monetary donations for support of the families are also appreciated.
In addition to all of this please pray for these families who have endured so much to find safety for their children. The Diocese of Tucson has truly demonstrated what it means to Share the Journey. Thank you.
