After a long life of achievement, fitness and independence, Fred B. Roby, 93, passed away on June 30, 2023. Born on August 31, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Frederick and Catherine Roby, Fred grew up in Pittsburgh and lived there until he enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 18 and served in light armor. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary Pavlich Roby, Ph.D. A highlight of their lives together was the many trips they made to Croatia to visit Mary's relatives. Fred attended college at Slippery Rock University where he lettered in Cross Country and Track and graduated with honors. He attended the University of Illinois and received both an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Physiological Sciences. He spent his career as a professor at the University of Arizona and retired after 35 years as professor emeritus. As a professor, he taught exercise physiology and directed graduate programs in Animal Physiology and Exercise and Sport Sciences. Fred also served as the physiologist for U.S. Synchronized Swimming. His residence for many years was at Splendido, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Oro Valley. He is survived by brother Paul Roby and four sisters: Carol Knowlson, Katherine Warner, Marita Fizer, and Nancy Rye. Donations may be made to the Scholarship Committee at Splendido, Oro Valley, Arizona.
