C.S. Lewis once remarked that people who think Jesus of Nazareth is a myth, have not read many myths. [1] Myths don’t have a place or a time, Jesus had both a place he was born and a definite time within which he lived. Jesus invaded chronological time, myths do not invade our time. Why was Jesus born when he was born? The scriptural answer is that it was the fullness of time:
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. Gal. 4:4-7.
The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. Jer. 33:14
People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Lk. 21:26
What did the fullness of time look like when Jesus was born? The violence of the Roman empire dominated the Mediterranean world. Israel was fractured and in disarray. Half the Empire were slaves. Woman and children were exploited and it was, if not in good taste, at least accepted. In the Christmas story, children and their mothers were slaughtered in the street. The fullness of time includes stress, exploitation and abuse. Yet, there were souls that responded to God’s call, just like today. They stood before the Lord and they followed. The ‘right time’ is the same as ‘time for a change.’Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.” Lk. 21:36
