Collins is an American physician-geneticist, noted for his discovery of disease genes, his leadership of the Human Genome Project, and as Director, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) until his retirement in 2021. As Director of NIH he was responsible for all the Institutes, including the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In his book he advocates theistic evolution and describes his conversion from an atheist to a Christian, strongly influenced by C.S. Lewis's writings. He founded BioLogos, a faith and science organization in 2007. He was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2020, joining a prestigious group including Mother Teresa.
