By definition, a vocation is a "calling." So often when we think of others we have met we wonder "what is their vocation?" However, in that question, many of us focus on what is their job or career. To which we find that they are a business person, a teacher, a nurse or doctor, or some other worthwhile career path.
What was St. Joseph's vocation?
His "calling" - and yes, he was "called," we may say was a carpenter. But that doesn't come close to really answering the question. Yes, he was a carpenter by trade, the breadwinner, and a hard worker; but he was so much more. His vocation was also a loving, caring spouse to Blessed Mary. He was a protector of his charges (Mary and Jesus) that God the Father had placed under his care. He was a teacher of the young child that needed to be tutored in the worldly ways of earth. He was an example to all of a true vocation; how each of us needs to live our lives, whether it be spouse, protector, step-father, teacher, and worker. But also St. Joseph was whatever he needed to be, to bring his spouse, his child, and others, to their final spiritual home with God the Father. Let us take inspiration from St. Joseph to ensure that we too ensure that our families arrive safely to our home with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Thank you St. Joseph for following God's Will, and showing us the way towards a "total vocation".
