That infuriated Saul whose center was not God, but his pride and power. Saul’s growing animosity toward David came to a head when he tried to kill David who then fled Saul’s court. According to the Book of Samuel, David did not attack Saul but withdrew into the hills. The story from First Samuel today is about David’s center.“The women played and sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, David his tens of thousands.” 1 Sam. 18:7.
David became king when, later, Saul fell on his own sword during battle. 1 Sam. 31:4 After a number of years and many battles, all of Israel finally gathered around King David in Hebron and said, "We are your own flesh and blood.” 2 Sam. 5:1-2 [i]He said: “Here is the king’s spear. Let an attendant come over to get it. The LORD will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness. Today, though the LORD delivered you into my grasp, I would not harm the LORD’s anointed.” 1 Sam. 26:22-23.
