St. Joseph, Mary and Jesus’ life was not ‘perfect’ in any conventional sense. A Holy Family is formed in adversity. Adversity is when the true nature of the love of husband, wife and child is revealed. Not an easy message, but at least it is true. This is Oro Valley Catholic and I am Fr. John Arnold. Consider, the scriptures today.God’s Word spurs me to love because it tells me the truth about who God is. That truth bears little resemblance to my childhood caricatures of a benevolent dictator with a mile-wide mean streak. The Father who knit me in my mother’s womb, sent His Son to die for me on the cross, and sustains my every breath with His Holy Spirit is for me, not against (Rom. 8:31). Think about that for a second. Let it sink in. God is for you. He’s not rooting against you. He’s not waiting for you to screw up. He’s not itching to teach you a lesson. He is passionately, undeniably, and irrevocably for you. Campbell, Colleen Carroll. The Heart of Perfection: How the Saints Taught Me to Trade My Dream of Perfect for God's (pp. 102-103). In short, be good to dad and your sins are forgiven. God has your back. St. Paul also has some much needed advice. In his letter to the Colossians he writesWhoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Sirach 3
Compassion is only needed when there is weakness, probably my weakness and my need for compassion. Difficult circumstances create our need for kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another. The scriptures assume human weakness. It is there that God’s spirit dwells made manifest in our kindness, humility, gentleness and forgiveness. Adversity is what makes the presence of God real. St. Paul observes the necessary foundation for the Christian family when he writes“Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.”
All of this is rooted in reading scripture, praying the psalms and singing hymns to God. The Gospel from Matthew today, tells a story about two fathers, one who loved the God revealed in scripture and one who was afraid. There is adversity in both stories, St. Joseph and King Herod. How each father deals with adversity displays the difference between them. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
St. Joseph protects his family in a difficult world. But it [St. Paul’s teaching] forbids that exaggerated liberty which cares not for the good of the family; it forbids that in this body which is the family, the heart be separated from the head to the great detriment of the whole body and the proximate danger of ruin. For if the man is the head, the woman is the heart, and as he occupies the chief place in ruling, so she may and ought to claim for herself the chief place in love...
Dads and Moms have threats to protect their families from. What kids watch on tv or through social media. Parents can’t stop every threat, but they can prepare their kids for the world by being people that children feel confident coming to. Mom and Dad, are listeners. If God can speak through an angel, he can speak through your kids.“… so Joseph, guardian and cooperator in the providential mystery of God, even in exile watched over the one who brings about the New Covenant.”
“ One hundred years ago, Pope Leo XIII had already exhorted the Catholic world to pray for the protection of St. Joseph, Patron of the whole Church. That pope appealed to Joseph's "fatherly love...for the child Jesus" and commended to him, as "the provident guardian of the divine Family," … Since that time, the Church has implored the protection of St. Joseph on the basis of "that sacred bond of charity which united him to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God," and the Church has commended to Joseph all of her cares, including those dangers which threaten the human family. Even today we have many reasons to pray in a similar way:
"Most beloved father, dispel the evil of falsehood and sin...graciously assist us from heaven in our struggle with the powers of darkness...and just as once you saved the Child Jesus from mortal danger, so now defend God's holy Church from the snares of her enemies and from all adversity." Today we still have good reason to commend everyone to St. Joseph. [i]
Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfectionMay they protect and help your family in this New Year. I wish you a peaceful, happy and holy New Year to you and your family.
